Description

Surprise Sunrise: I was hoping to catch this occultation. The weather has not been cooperating lately, last night was clear so after a night of imaging I decided to give the rising moon a try. I followed the moon from below the horizon and began imaging at the first sight of the lunar disk. Taking several images per minute using the one-shot-color camera. Jupiter began to appear as the moon rose. A stunningly beautiful site!

The 5.2% illuminated moon was about 6 degrees above the horizon when it rose from behind a distant tree covered mountain, through almost 8 atmospheres. Given the conditions and thick air mass I am pleased with the results. This was a difficult occultation to capture and feel fortunate to have captured it given its path.

Each image is a single frame at ~0.05" exposure and about 20 seconds between frames.
